The Silly Mouse

The Silly Mouse

This is a story about a silly mouse.

The mouse lived in a barn on a farm.

The mouse was very lonely though.

For he lived alone and had no friends.

One day the farmer brought home a young cat.

The cat was to keep the barn free of rodents.

The cat was very young still...

But he was old enough to kill a mouse!

The mouse looked on as he saw the young cat.

The cat seemed to cuddle up in the hay bales.

The silly mouse went over to the cat.

"Hello Cat, I am Mouse" said the silly mouse.

"Oh…..hello," said the cat still sleepy from his nap.

"What are you doing here?" asked the mouse.

"I am here to live in the barn." said the cat.

"Oh, that is great!" exclaimed the happy mouse.

"Why is that great?" the cat asked.

"Because I have no friends, Cat, and I would like to be your friend." said the silly mouse.

"Oh,….I see " said the cat as he stretched out his body and yawned.

"But... Wait a minute!!!"

"You are a mouse…..and I am supposed to eat you!!"

"No,no,no!" said the silly mouse.

"You are not supposed to eat me, you are supposed to meet me."

"Oh?" asked the cat.

"Yes," said the mouse "and now we have met."

"Nice to meet you, Cat" said the silly mouse.

"Nice to meet you too, Mouse," yawned the cat as he curled back up in the hay bales.

The next day, the silly mouse was walking in the barn.

All of the sudden, the cat jumped down in front of him.

"You tricked me!" said the cat.

"I AM supposed to eat you, not meet you!"

"Oh no," said the mouse, "I am sorry my friend, you must of misunderstood."

"I said you are to greet me!"

"Greet you? How do I greet you, Mouse?" asked the cat.

"Well, you are supposed to say, 'hello, Mouse!' when you see me.

That is what friends do, Cat."

"Oh, I see...," said the cat. "well….hello, Mouse!"

"Hello, Cat," said the silly mouse.

The next day Mouse walked over to Cat.

"Good morning, Cat!" said the silly mouse.

"Mouse, you are wrong again. I am too supposed to eat you.

I am not to meet you or to greet you" said the cat.

"Oh, I am sorry, Cat. But you see we already have met and I already greeted you, because you are my friend."

"I am sorry, Mouse, but I do have to eat you," said the cat.

"Are you sure, Cat? I think you are supposed to heat me!" the silly mouse said.

"Heat you? How do I do that mouse?"

"It is easy, Cat. You lay down, and I will curl up under your chin and this is how you will heat me."

"Oh, I see " said the cat.

"That is fine, Mouse, come get warm," purred the cat.

And the cat and the silly mouse took a nap together.

The next day the silly mouse went over to Cat.

"Good morning, Cat!" he said.

"Mouse, it is you! Mouse, you will fool me no more!"

"I am going to have you for dinner and that is final!!" shouted Cat.

"Oh, that is wonderful!" said the silly mouse, "what are we going to eat when you have me over for dinner?"

The cat stammered, "what…I …..uh…I’m not sure, Mouse. What would you like to have?"

"I am very partial to carrots myself," said the silly mouse.

"Well then, carrots we shall have! I will see you for dinner tomorrow," said Cat.

The next day, Mouse went to look for Cat to have his carrot dinner.

As Mouse was looking by the hay bales-

SWOOSH!!!

Cat had picked up Mouse by the tail!!

"Oh, hello, Cat! I was looking for you for dinner!"

"Mouse, you will fool me no longer. I am going to eat you for dinner!"

"Yes, it is true. I have fooled you, Cat. I meant you no harm.

I just wanted to have you for a friend.

For I like to greet you, Cat.

I like when you heat me, and I would love to eat with you, Cat.

You are my only friend, and I would do anything for you."

And with that, the silly mouse crawled into Cat’s mouth, and laid down.

"MOUFF, MOUFF!" shouted Cat!

Cat took Mouse out of his mouth.

"Mouse, what are you doing?" he asked.

"Giving you what you want, Cat. I want you to be happy. You are my friend."

"It is written, "Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."

"And I love you Cat, you are my friend," said the silly mouse.

Well, Cat sat there and thought of what Mouse had said.

He never knew he was loved so much by the little mouse.

"Mouse?" asked Cat, "Please forgive me."

"I’ve never had a friend like you, I want to greet you. I want to heat you,

And I want to have you over for carrot dinner.

But most of all, I want you to be my friend," said the cat.

The silly mouse looked up at the cat.

"Oh Cat, of course I will be your friend!"

So, the silly mouse and the cat stayed friends.

They would greet each other.

They would take naps together.

They would have supper together.

Yes, the silly mouse and the cat were friends for life and lived happily in the barn together.
